NAUGATUCK — A fire severely damaged a single-family home on Beecher Street Sunday night.

The fire was called in at 6:46 p.m. Fire Chief Ken Hanks said the home at 49 Beecher St. was fully involved when firefighters first arrived on scene.

No injuries were reported. Hanks said no one was home at the time. The fire was called in by a neighbor.

The home was heavily damaged with significant fire and smoke damage to the first floor and the attic, Hanks said.

It was a labor-intensive fire for a dozen firefighters from Naugatuck and five firefighters from Engine 4 in Waterbury who worked on the scene.

Hanks said the heavy fire was under control within a half hour, but firefighters worked for more than an hour chasing the fire inside walls.

“A lot of manual labor involved,” Hanks said.

About an hour after the fire was reported smoke billowed out of the roof line and windows of the home as firefighters broke windows and opened walls. The interior of the home showed extensive charring.

Friends and relatives gathered outside the home, several hugged a man standing on a walkway above the home. One woman brought him a coat.

One man was living in the house while his parents recently moved to a condo, Hanks said

Borough records show the 2,898 square foot building is owned by Janet and Joseph Sabal.

The cause of fire remains under investigation, but it’s believed to have ignited by accident.

Fire marshals had not yet made their official determination of the cause as of Monday night, Hanks said. At this point, it appears a fire in the fireplace may have spread to the walls and then throughout the home, he said.
