NEWTOWN — The second annual Sandy Hook 5K will take place Saturday on the campus of Fairfield Hills in Newtown beginning at 8:15 a.m.

The Sandy Hook Run for the Families held on March 23, 2013, was a 5K hosted by the Hartford Marathon Foundation and organized by Naugatuck residents Katie Blake and Matt Marcella. The event raised more than $438,000 for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

This year’s theme for The Sandy Hook 5K is Love Runs Through. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place male and female runners. Additional awards will be presented to the top runners in several age categories.

“The response to last year’s event was so overwhelming,” said Blake, who is returning to organize the 2014 event, in a news release. “We wanted to make sure the meaning behind this event continued on so that the running community could continue to show its support for Newtown. The Sandy Hook 5K is not about running. It is about life: honoring the memory of precious lives lost through tragedy and celebrating the gift of life. It is about uniting in hope for the future.”

Registration fees and proceeds from the event will be donated to the Newtown Memorial Fund. For more information, visit www.5krunforshf.org.
