NAUGATUCK — The Travel Channel will bring one of the borough’s most famous businessmen to the small screen.

Charles Goodyear, who discovered the process of vulcanizing rubber in 1839, will be the focus of a documentary for the Travel Channel’s “Mysteries at the Museum” series.

Goodyear was born in 1800 in New Haven and began working for his father in Naugatuck when he was 21 manufacturing metal and ivory buttons as we as agricultural implements.

Parts of the documentary were shot last summer at the Naugatuck Historical Society, which houses a number of Goodyear’s belongings.

“I think this documentary is important because it shows how we’re globally important. Rubber was a product that changed the world,” Naugatuck Historical Society President Wendy Murphy said. “It puts Naugatuck on the map and shows that our history has global significance.”

The documentary will air Jan. 16 on the Travel Channel at 9 p.m.
