NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Elks Club will pit amateur chefs and their sauces against each other in the name of charity.

The club is hosting the “Battle of the Sauces” Jan. 25. The event will feature 12 amateur chefs making different types of sauces, from traditional spaghetti sauce to Alfredo sauce, Naugatuck Elk Terry Ford said.

The event costs $10 to attend and the club will provide pasta and bread for people to taste the sauce, Ford said. Attendees can vote for their favorite sauce at the cost of $1 per vote.

The net proceeds from the event will benefit The Sandy Ground: Where Angels Play, a program that is building 26 playgrounds across the state both in memory of the children who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the December 2012 shooting and to help beautify areas that were impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Ford said that the Elks of Connecticut pledged to donate $20,000 to the project, and each of the clubs across the state is helping to raise money. The Emblem Club is also helping with the fundraiser, he added.

Ford said the Naugatuck Elks Club felt a special tie to this project since former Sandy Hook Elementary School Principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, who was also killed in the school shooting, was a Naugatuck native.

“We thought it would be a good thing to help do our part to keep the memory alive and do something positive for kids throughout the state,” Ford said.

The Battle of the Sauces will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Elks Lodge, 758 Rubber Ave. The event will also feature a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses and a DJ. A snow date is scheduled for Jan. 26 at the same time.
