Trash-Barrels

NAUGATUCK — The combination of New Year’s Day, a snow storm and equipment breakdowns, trash and recycling collection in Naugatuck is running off schedule.

Collection is already running one day late, through Saturday, due to the New Year’s holiday on Wednesday. However, recycling collection has been further delayed due to mechanical failure, Recycling and Solid Waste Coordinator Sheila Baummer said.

The recycling truck went off line mid-morning on Thursday about a third of the way through the normal Wednesday route, Baummer said. Recycling collections are expected to resume Friday afternoon and continue through the weekend, she said. The public works department hopes to be back on schedule by Monday, she said.

Trash collection is currently being done by the two old-style rear loading trucks rather then the new automated trucks, Baummer said. Given the weather, collecting trash manually isn’t an easy task, she said. Crews will not be able to empty carts that are buried in snow banks, and residents are asked to keep their carts free of snow if possible.
