Santana completes Navy training

GREAT LAKES, Ill. — Navy Seaman Recruit Christopher Santana recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Santana completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations,” an exercise designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment.

Santana, a 2013 graduate of Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford, is the son of Christopher Santana of Wallingford and Donna Santana of Naugatuck.

Ion Bank Foundation donates to soup kitchen

NAUGATUCK — A donation from the Ion Bank Foundation helped ensure the St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury shelter and soup kitchen had enough to give on Thanksgiving.

At an impromptu meeting, Paul Iadarola, executive director of St. Vincent DePaul mentioned to Chuck Boulier, president and CEO of Ion Bank, that it looked like the mission was going to fall about 50 turkeys short of its projected need at the shelter and soup kitchen this Thanksgiving Day and would require about $762 to eliminate the expected deficit.

Boulier brought St. Vincent DePaul’s plight to the attention of the Ion Bank Foundation, which agreed to foot the bill to insure that everyone who came to the soup kitchen on Thanksgiving had a meal.
