Barrere to receive research award

HAMDEN — Cynthia Barrere, of Prospect, a professor in the School of Nursing at Quinnipiac University, will receive the Virginia A. Henderson Award for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Research at the annual meeting of the Connecticut Nurses’ Association on Oct. 23.

The award recognizes Barrere for her research expertise as well as the impact her leadership in nursing research has had on the state, regional and national levels. The award also recognizes Barrere’s achievements in creating an atmosphere among colleagues, faculty and students that inspires scholarship and research.

Barrere joined the Quinnipiac faculty in 2004. She holds a doctorate in medical sociology from the University of Connecticut. She holds master’s degrees in sociology and nursing from the University of Connecticut and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Western Connecticut State University.
She currently holds leadership positions in the American Holistic Nurses Association Research and Grants Committee, and the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses.

Naugatuck High students earn accolades

NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck High School students Jake Morrissey and Faith Okifo recently received school honors.

Morrissey was awarded the Letter of Commendation selected by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Morrissey earned this honor by placing in the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the National Merit Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. He entered the 2014 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Okifo was selected as an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Okifo earned this honor by placing in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 African American students, who requested consideration in the National Achievement Program. She entered the 2014 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The National Achievement Scholarship

Program was initiated in 1964 specifically to honor academically promising African American students.

Matthew and Rebecca (Trzaski) DeAngelis of Seymour announce the birth of a son, Zachary Wylde DeAngelis, born Aug. 20, 2013 at Waterbury Hospital.
The grandparents are Ernest and Robin Trzaski of Prospect; Robert and Joan Pillsbury of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

All-Star Driver ranked among fastest growing companies

WATERTOWN — All-Star Driver announced it has been named to Inc. Magazine’s annual 5000 List, a ranking of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the United States.

All-Star Driver, which is based in Watertown and has an office in Naugatuck, is ranked No. 1,598 on the nationwide list, No. 18 overall in Connecticut and No. 23 in the ranking of the top 100 education companies in America.

“To be recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest-growing companies in the nation and in Connecticut is gratifying,” said Brandon Dufour, general manager of All-Star Driver, in a press release. “It’s a validation of our strategy, the quality of our programs, and the hard work of our great employees.”
The Inc. ranking is based on a 3-year evaluation of All-Star Driver’s performance; 2009-2012 revenue growth of 248 percent and 65 jobs added during that time period.
