CNLogo1NAUGATUCK — Starting on Monday, the Route 8 southbound entrance ramp at exit 28 near Linden Park will be closed for construction of retaining walls and fencing.

The work is part of phase one of the Naugatuck Pedestrian Greenway project. Phase one, which is estimated to cost about $2 million, runs from the General Pulaski Bridge, through Linden Park, and into the borough’s downtown.

The Department of Public Works is overseeing the project and Guerrera Construction Company of Oxford is doing the work.

The project hit a snag last fall when workers discovered the retaining wall holding up Route 8 near Linden Park was coated in asbestos.

A detour will be set up sending drivers on North Main Street to the southbound entrance ramp at exit 27 while the work is done. The ramp at exit 28 is expected to be closed for 10 weeks.

The greenway is part of a 44-mile greenway eventually planned to run along the Naugatuck River from Torrington to Derby.
