HARTFORD — State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus (R-89) invited her constituents to join a petition to block a scheduled increase to the gross receipts tax on the wholesale price of gasoline.

The gross receipts tax is a tax that motorists pay above and beyond the state and federal per-gallon taxes. The tax is levied on petroleum as it’s imported into Connecticut. Zupkus supports the Republican-led effort to block the July 1 hike to this percentage-based tax, which produces more revenue for the state and higher prices at the pump as the wholesale cost of gasoline increases, according to a press release issued by Zupkus’ office.

According to the release, if the legislature fails to take action, this wholesale tax will increase from 7 percent per gallon to 8.1 percent per gallon.

This increase would amount to roughly 4 cents more per gallon, according to the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association, and would deliver to the state $60 million over the next year.
