NAUGATUCK — A section of Rubber Avenue is closed due to a gas leak.

The road is closed between Neumann Street and Woodruff Avenue. Yankee Gas is currently on the scene, police said. Police are directing drivers to detour through Mountview Plaza, Fire Chief Ken Hanks said.

Hanks said a gas leak near the Elks Club was reported at 8 a.m. High gas levels were found in the storm sewers and gas could be smelled from 200 feet away, Hanks said. No buildings had to be evacuated, he said.

The cause of the leak has not yet been determined.

The section of road is expected to be closed until at least 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The police department is asking drivers to avoid the area so they are not delayed.
