NAUGATUCK — Firefighters used ladders to rescue six people from a burning apartment building at 66 Terrace Ave. Sunday night.

A ground-floor apartment in the three-story, 12-unit building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and firefighters could see people hanging out of windows on the top floors screaming for help.

They extended a ladder from the ground on the left side of the building where the fire started, and also positioned the ladder from Tower 1 to a balcony on the top floor to rescue people.

The occupant of the apartment where the fire started was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, Fire Capt. Jim Trzaski said. A firefighter was also hospitalized for exhaustion.

Fire damage was contained to one unit, but there was smoke damage throughout the building, Trzaski said.

The 12 occupants were allowed back inside to salvage some belongings, but they had to find another place to sleep for the night for safety reasons, Trzaski said. The American Red Cross was on scene, and was finding accommodations for two tenants. The others were staying with relatives or friends.
