Safe Haven holding art show and gala

SOUTHBURY — Safe Haven of Great Waterbury is holding its 3rd Annual Art Show and Gala this weekend.

The show will open with a gala celebration Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. at B’Nai Israel on 444 Main St. N, Southbury.

The gala opening will include refreshments and a chance to view original paintings, and photography by more than 30 accomplished artists. The artists are donating 30 percent of any art sold during the show to Safe Haven. There will be a silent auction of art donated by the artists. All proceeds from the silent auction will go directly to Safe Haven. Tickets for the gala celebration are $35.

Safe Haven provides free, comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The show will continue with free admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at B’Nai Israel, where the art can be viewed and purchased.  For more information, call (203) 575-0388.

Seymour holding Christmas parade

SEYMOUR — The Seymour Christmas Parade Association has begun planning for the 41st annual Seymour Christmas Parade.

The parade is open to residents of Seymour and surrounding towns. Participants compete for trophies and ribbons in four categories — children’s marching units, adult floats, school groups, and best overall.

The parade committee is also seeking volunteers to assist in the planning of the parade as well as on parade day. Residents of Seymour as well as neighboring communities are welcome to serve on the parade committee.

Literacy Volunteers hosting Scrabble challenge

WATERBURY —Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury is holding a Scrabble challenge.

The challenge will be held Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Chase Collegiate School, 565 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. The evening will include a light supper and teacup auction.

A mystery word will be reveled at the start of play and teams will have 30 minutes to work together to achieve the highest score in the main round. There will also be a 15-minute bonus round. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Proceeds will benefit the educational programs of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury, a non-profit organization that teaches local adults to read, write, speak, and understand English through the dedication of trained volunteer tutors.

Sacred Heart Academy holding annual memorial mass

HAMDEN — Sacred Heart Academy will hold the Chapel Bells Annual Memorial Mass Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Mount Sacred Heart Chapel, 265 Benham St., Hamden.

This liturgy is held in remembrance of and to honor deceased alumnae, family, and friends of the Sacred Heart community. Also, the names of immediate family members who have died during the past year will be entered in a special Book of Remembrance for the Liturgy.

Derby Historical Society holding reception

DERBY — The Derby Historical Society will hold its Annual Appeal Reception, Commodore Isaac Hull Program Nov. 19.

Glenn Cantwell is a longtime early American history collector and enthusiast who has been researching all things Isaac Hull for the past 20 years and will soon publish his first book “America’s Captain of 1812.” The book contains vivid photographs of artifacts, lithographs, maps, letters, and newspaper articles contemporaneous to Hull’s time.

The reception will be held at the Grassy Hill Lodge in Derby from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and support the Derby Historical Societies Annual Appeal and programs.

School hosting wine tasting

SS. Peter and Paul School in Waterbury will be hosting its annual wine tasting Nov. 17. A variety of wines will be available to taste and order. Jazz Saxophonist Vincent Ingala, a Prospect resident, will provide entertainment.

Village to host Alzheimer’s support group

WATERBURY — The Village at East Farms senior living community is hosting an Alzheimer’s support group at 6 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month.

The community is located at 180 Scott Road. The support group provides participants with an opportunity to learn more about the different stages of Alzheimer’s and offers tips on ways to cope.
