NAUGATUCK — A car accident shut down a portion of New Haven Road Thursday night after a tractor-trailer slammed into a utility pole, snapping it.

The accident was reported at 5:54 p.m. in the area of 1221 New Haven Road, near the intersection with Beacon Valley Road.

Fire Capt. Vincent Healy said another car also involved in an accident with the truck, just before hitting the pole, was also nearby. Both drivers of the car and truck had gotten out of their vehicles and were uninjured.

Fire Chief Ken Hanks said there were live wires on the truck and Connecticut Light & Power was called to cut the power to the lines to avoid a fire. About 100 gallons of fuel spilled from the tractor-trailer, Hanks said. Firefighters used Speedy Dry to contain the spill and were able to prevent any fuel from spilling into drains along the road, Hanks said.

The area was cleaned up by a private contractor over night with the fire department providing portable lights for the work. Hanks said the goal was to have the area all clean before the rain started today and the spill was cleaned up by about 4 a.m.

As of this post the accident remained under investigation.
