NAUGATUCK — A borough man and woman were arrested Tuesday after police said they crashed a stolen motorcycle and left it lying in the middle of Mill Street.

Deidre Gonzalez, 20, of 75 Sunburst Road, was driving the 1999 Kawasaki Ninja at about 3:30 p.m. when she said she hit a stick in the road and lost control, said Lt. Robert Harrison of the Naugatuck Police Department. The motorcycle tipped over and Gonzalez and her passenger, 22-year-old Eric Santos of the same address, hit the ground, Harrison said. Santos broke his nose, had cuts to his face and fractured his left shoulder, while Gonzalez sustained minor injuries, according to police.

A witness told police he then saw Gonzalez and Santos get into a gray car, which some friends were riding in, Harrison said. An officer found the car on North Church Street and, while investigating the accident, determined the motorcycle had been reported stolen from Meriden, according to police. It was damaged and towed from the scene, Harrison said.

Gonzalez and Santos initially lied to the officer about who was driving and what they were doing, Harrison said. They were both charged with third-degree larceny and interfering with an officer. Gonzalez was also charged with reckless driving, evading responsibility and operating without a motorcycle license.

Gonzalez was released on a $1,000 bond to appear Sept. 27 in Waterbury Superior Court, while Santos was held on a $10,000 bond to appear Wednesday in the same court.
