Household hazardous waste to be collected

WOLCOTT — Residents of the Tunxis Recycling Operating Committee region, which includes Prospect, can bring household hazardous waste to the Wolcott Town Garage, 48 Todd Road, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Residents of Wolcott, Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Meriden, New Britain, Plainville, Plymouth, Prospect and Southington may bring their household hazardous waste to the collection site for free. Identification will be required as proof of residency.

No waste from businesses will be accepted.

Items to be accepted include: pesticides and poisons, herbicides and weed killers, oil-based paint, paint thinners, varnish, household batteries, hobby and photographic chemicals, pool chemicals, household cleaners and disinfectants, antifreeze, waste oil, gasoline, fertilizers, fluorescent bulbs and mercury-containing thermostats.

Items that cannot be accepted include: household trash, latex paint, tires, propane tanks, computers and electronic equipment, explosives, smoke detectors, medical waste, fire extinguishers and empty containers.

Additional household hazardous waste collections sponsored by the Tunxis Recycling Operating Committee will be held on Oct. 6 in Bristol and Oct. 20 in New Britain/Berlin.
