Borough accepting applications for elderly, disabled programs

NAUGATUCK — The Assessor’s Office is accepting applications for the elderly or totally disabled renters program through Sept. 14.

Eligible applicants must be 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2011 or totally disabled according to Social Security guidelines. Disabled applicants do not have to be 65 years old.

The income for a married couple must not exceed $39,500, and income for a single person must not exceed $32,300, for the 2011 calendar year. Proof of income must be provided and would include a federal income tax return adjusted gross income and a copy of applicant’s Social Security 1099 or copies of bank interest, dividends, pension, annuities, Social Security and withdrawals from IRAs.

A renter is eligible for a refund by the state if 35 percent of rent and utilities exceed 5 percent of income. Verifications of expenses must also be provided, including rent and utility bills for the 2011 calendar year. Telephone and cable TV do not qualify as utilities.

Disabled residents must provide proof from the Social Security Administration, such as forms SSA1099 or a TPQY, when applying.
