NAUGATUCK — Daniel Fontes of Naugatuck received quite an unexpected birthday present Sunday.

Fontes, an electrician, bought a “20X the Cash” scratch-off ticket as a 31st birthday present for himself, according to the release issued by the CT Lottery. The ticket truend out to be a $20,000 winner — one of the game’s top prizes.

“My first thought was, ‘I better sign the back of this ticket,’” Fontes told Lottery officials, according to the release. “It was all pretty unbelievable … winning $20,000 on my birthday.”

Fontes claimed his prize check for $13,666, the prize value after taxes, at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill.

“I’ll be putting the money right in the bank,” said Fontes, according to the release.

For selling the top prize winning ticket, Stop One Mart, 282 South Main St., will receive a $200 bonus check from the CT Lottery.
