PROSPECT — A local woman is looking for book donations to bring to a school in Honduras.

Cassondra White spent last year volunteering at the Marie Poussepin Center in Guaimaca, Honduras as part of post-graduate volunteer service program through Stonehill College in Massachusetts.

Last year, the school expanded its program to include Honduras and White was among the first group to be sent there.

Since the school had never sent anyone to Honduras before, she and the other volunteers had an idea of what the mission would be like, but did not know what to expect on a day-to-day basis.

The volunteers were stationed at the Marie Poussepin Center, which consists of a girls’ school, health clinic, and organic farm.

White worked at the school and became the unofficial librarian.

She explained that the library was a small room with a few cupboards of books. Many of the books were educational and resource books. There were not too many books there for leisure reading for the students.

Though there were not many books, the students loved to read, White said. While she was volunteering at the center, a few of the students read the entire Harry Potter series.

After a year of volunteering, educating and helping spread a love of reading to the students at the Marie Poussepin Center, White returned home to America.

However, just because she was no longer in Honduras didn’t mean she was going to stop helping the students.

White began a book drive to help fill the center’s library with both educational and fiction books. Her goal is to collect 200 books before she returns to Honduras in the autumn.

To make it easy for people to donate White has created an Amazon.com wish list with all of the books already picked out.

Anyone who wishes to donate books not through Amazon or has a question can e-mail White at cassondraywhite@gmail.com.

Those interested in donating can find the wish list here.

Those interested in donating can find the wish list by going to Amazon.com and searching for Honduras Mission in the wish list section. The wish list can be found by clicking the link that says Honduras: Marie Poussepin Center.
