WATERBURY — An off-duty Naugatuck police officer stopped to help a young woman who smashed her car into a guardrail on Route 8 Tuesday afternoon.

Waterbury Deputy Fire Chief David Stankus said a Naugatuck officer — identified by the department as Bryan Coney — stopped to help a young woman who had fallen by the roadside after getting out of the damaged car.

Coney had pulled out a medical bag and was giving the woman oxygen when Waterbury firefighters arrived.

“He was a key player, that’s for sure,” Stankus said. “He was tending to her as well as anybody could.”

The accident happened shortly before 2:30 p.m., between Exits 29 and 30 on Route 8 southbound. State police say the driver was transported to Waterbury Hospital with minor injuries. The cause is being investigated. No further details were available from state police as of this post.
