HARTFORD — State Sen. Joseph Crisco Jr. (D-17) recently experienced first hand the life of a firefighter.

Crisco, along with other guests, took part in Fire Ops 101 Day at the Hartford Fire Department Training Center last week. The event simulates the duties of a firefighter, including responding to a structure fire, motor vehicle accident, and an emergency medical incident.

“I’m always so grateful to professional and volunteer firefighters throughout the state who routinely risk their own safety, and after today’ glimpse of what they encounter in the line of duty I appreciate even more the work they do and the dangers they face,” Crisco said in a news release. “There is no substitute for this first-hand experience and the lasting memory I’ll have of the urgency with which these men and women respond to emergencies, make decisions, and execute what they’ve been trained to do, saving lives and protecting property in the process.”

In the past, Crisco has supported for legislation to provide workers compensation coverage for both professional and volunteer firefighters and has helped secure state funding for firefighting and rescue equipment for departments throughout his district. In 2010, he helped secure funds to purchase property in Beacon Falls for a new Naugatuck Valley Regional Fire Training School.

“There’s no question but that my experience today will serve me well while we continue working to replace the former fire training school in Derby,” Crisco said in the release.
