NAUGATUCK — A fire destroyed a mobile home in the Webbers Mobile Home Park at 139 Lewis St. Saturday morning. The fire left a cat dead. No one else was injured.
The fire department got a call at 11:46 a.m. and flames were leaping out of the windows by the time firefighters got to the scene, according to Fire Marshall Bob Weaver. Firefighters had the inferno under control within 15 minutes, Weaver said. He said they tried to save as much as they could for the owner.
“Mobile homes, they’re very small and they contain the heat so even a small fire does a tremendous amount of damage to it,” Fire Chief Ken Hanks said.
Weaver said the fire appears to have been caused by a stove burner that was left on, but the case is still under investigation.
The owner of the home in Webber’s Mobile Home Park, Robert Kingman, was away from home when the fire occurred. He said he didn’t remember leaving the stove on, according to Weaver. Kingman was the sole resident of the home.
The Red Cross relocated Kingman to the Comfort Inn for a few days after the home was deemed uninhabitable, officials said. He said it’s up to Kingman’s insurance company whether they try to fix the trailer or just replace it with a new one.
