DERBY — Police charged a Naugatuck man who is also dean of students at Derby Middle School with possessing narcotics after 66 Roxycodone pills were found in his computer bag last week at the school.

William LaRovera, 34, was also carrying a clear plastic tube with powder inside, which police said they also saw on a file cabinet and a plaque in the office of the boys’ locker room where the bag was found.

Roxycodone is a commonly abused prescription painkiller. In a release, the Derby Police Department noted narcotics abusers often crush the pills into powder to snort.

LaRovera did not provide a legal reason for possessing the painkillers, according to police.

LaRovera surrendered to police Thursday on five counts of drug charges. He was released on a $5,000 bond to appear Sept. 28 in Derby Superior Court.
