NAUGATUCK – The setting of structural steel for the bridge carrying Route 63 over Metro-North Railroad tracks and the Naugatuck River began this week and is scheduled to be completed around April 29.

Drivers should expect to encounter alternating one-way traffic on Route 63, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

Traffic may be stopped for periods of up to 10 minutes during the actual placement of structural steel.

Also, Elm Street under Route 63 is scheduled to be closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. for about two weeks. Detours will be posted, the DOT said.

The work is part of a replacement of the bridge structure and substructure. The contract was awarded to the Brunalli Construction Corp. on Oct. 22, 2008, at a cost of $23 million. The project is scheduled to be completed in September.
