BEACON FALLS — A new Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicle program means a change in how delinquent motor vehicle taxes are processed.

The Tax Collector’s Office was recently given access to the DMV portal that will allow the office to process real time put-ons and take-offs of delinquent tax bills, according to a press release. Each motor vehicle owner will have a personal number, which will identify them along with a personal vehicle number.

Residents can’t re-register vehicles or register new vehicles if they owe motor vehicle taxes. Under the old procedure, the release stated, the Tax Collector’s Office was able to issue paper releases or stamp the back of renewal registration forms. This is no longer the case.

Due to the change, the Tax Collector’s Office will only do real-time take-offs at the end of each day. The payment policy for releasing delinquent taxes will remain the same, cash, certified bank check or postal money order. A personal check may take up to two weeks to process.
