The competition featured five fourth-graders who made healthy sandwiches. The sandwiches were judged by Assistant Superintendent of Schools Christopher Montini, Board of Education Vice Chairwoman Dorothy Neth-Kunin, Assistant Business Manager Bernice Rizk and Diane Nardelli of Nardelli’s Grinder Shoppe. Maple Hill Elementary School fourth-grader Cayla Howard won the competition with her sandwich, The Health Factor. The sandwich featured chicken on Ciabatta bread with, pesto spread, spinach, Swiss and Feta cheese. Her sandwich will be featured on the school’s lunch menu as well as Nardelli’s menu. For each sandwich sold at Nardelli’s $1 will be donated to the culinary department at Naugatuck High School. The other contestants were Kalangi Pedro with her Tuna Salad Sandwich, Samantha Mullin with her Sam’s Turkey Meatball Sub, Nadia Cestari with her Quesadilla Wrap and Mia Grella with her Italian CMT. –LUKE MARSHALL Children at Tender Years Preschool in Naugatuck set ‘leprechaun traps’ on St. Patrick’s Day to try and catch a leprechaun. –CONTRIBUTED Algonquin Elementary School held its 19th annual Third Grade Science Fair March 28. –LUKE MARSHALL Naugatuck Exchange Club President-elect Kathy Lengyel, left, and President Nancy Barton stand on the Naugatuck Town Green April 1 in front of a tree that has been adorned with blue lights. The tree was lit to raise awareness about child abuse for the club’s Believe in the Blue campaign. The campaign will run throughout the entire month of April. A 2012 graduate of Naugatuck High School, Schebell completed 13 weeks of basic training. From there, he completed 29 more days of Marine Comcat Training at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. He is now ready to begin MOS training in transport at Fort Leonard in Missouri.
