Naugatuck resident Liz Recce, a member of USA Martial Arts in Naugatuck, was invited to grade to 1st Dan Black Belt on Nov. 30 at the Boys Club in Waterbury. Reece completed all the forms, kicking, sparring, one-step, board breaking, four-man attack sequence and Asian weapons expertise requirements for the rank.-CONTRIBUTED

The Beacon Brook Heath Center Bandits won the 2012 Athena Softball Tournament Aug. 25 in Southington. The Bandits, who have not lost a game in two years, dedicated the win to Ellen Olschefski. Olschefski, a former administrator at the center, died unexpectedly in July. The Bandits presented the game ball to her husband, Bob Olschefski, after the win. The tournament raises money to assist employees with the financial burdens associated with cancer. -CONTRIBUTED
