MultimediaSlideshows Community Snapshots By mycitizensnews - May 18, 2012 0 40 Cynthia Barrere of Prospect, a professor in the School of Nursing at Quinnipiac University, has been named a faculty scholar for the 2011-12 academic year. Barrere conducts both clinical and education research aimed at improving health status of patients and advancing teaching strategies used for nurses and nursing students. Barrere joined the Quinnipiac faculty in 2004. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Western Connecticut State University, and a master’s degree in nursing and sociology and a doctorate in medical sociology from the University of Connecticut. Lance Cpl. Roger Rua of the U.S. Marine Corps, pictured with General Joseph F. Dunford, ACMC, recently received the Purple Heart award. Rua, a Naugatuck resident, was injured March 29 from an improvised explosive device, which exploded under the vehicle he was riding in, while serving in Afghanistan. Rua sustained multiple injuries to his neck, back, and right leg. He is recovering right now at the VA Medical Center in Massachusetts. For is service, Rua has also been awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and ISAF NATO Medal. –CONTRIBUTED Members of the Long River School National Junior Honor Society participate in a town clean-up April 21 in Prospect. The clean-up was organized by Mayor Robert Chatfield and honor society advisor Sandra Pantaleo. Twenty four members of the society cleaned up along the streets of Prospect. After collecting a truckload full of trash, the students enjoyed lunch at the Dairy Bar in Prospect. –CONTRIBUTED David Plante, a worker from Ed The Treeman, installs an American flag on a utility pole along Route 68 in Prospect May 12. The flag was one of 103 installed along the streets of downtown. Ed Brasche, owner of Ed The Treeman, donated five crews to put up the flags. The flags were purchased through donations to the Prospect Flag Fund, an initiative spearheaded by resident Robert Hiscox. –ELIO GUGLIOTTI Lisa Pettinicchi, a Naugatuck public schools music teacher and band director, will be among nearly 200 trumpet players and buglers to play Taps during a ceremony honoring the 150th anniversary of Taps, May 19 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Pettinicchi is a professional trumpet player and the former band master and conductor of the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard Band of Connecticut. -CONTRIBUTED
