Woodland swimming with current

The Woodland boys swim team is starting to gain momentum.

After starting the season 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Naugatuck Valley League, the Hawks have rallied to win three of their last four meets, including two in the league to improve to 3-5 and 2-2 in the NVL.

Meanwhile, all of this is happening with one of the smallest teams in school history. But the size of the team hasn’t affected the squad too much, other than making top finishes in each race a little more important.

“Individually, I don’t think it’s much different,” Woodland coach Tom Currier said. “All the kids are used to swimming four events a meet, so it’s not that I’m putting any more workload on them.”

The Hawks’ winless start to the season was deceiving, Currier said. The team’s solid showings of late are much more representative.

“We started off the season with some of the best teams in the area,” Currier said. “Sacred Heart is a potential state champion, Naugatuck is one of the best teams in the league, Haddam-Killingworth is strong, and Pomperaug is a State Open champion. We started off with the toughest parts of the schedule and now everyone is finally getting in swimming shape.”

On Tuesday, Woodland evened its league record with an 81-73 win at Seymour in a meet that wasn’t as close as the score would indicate. The Hawks swept the first eight events, gaining enough points to pull up in the final three events.

The 200 medley relay team of Eric Dietz, Alan Katrenya, Steve McCusker, and Andy O’Dell started the meet with a victory in 1:59.50 while the 200 freestyle relay squad of Patrick Dietz, Ryan Greenwood, Aidan Music, and Patrick O’Dell provided the Hawks’ final victory of the day in 1:48.28.

In between, Woodland’s best individual swimmers racked up their own victories. Patrick O’Dell won the 200 free in 1:55.53 and the 100 free in 53.68 seconds while younger brother Andy took the 100 fly in 59.33 seconds. Those two, along with freestyle sprinter Eric Dietz, have made up the backbone for the team throughout the season.

“Pat O’Dell, Andy O’Dell, and Eric Dietz have definitely been the standouts,” Currier said. “Those are my big dogs. They’re very important. They’re the three that I try to spread around if I need someone in a different event to race against the other team’s fastest kids.”

But production has gone beyond the top three.

“Everybody else has been pulling their weight,” Currier said. “Mike Christiano and Steve McCusker have been gaining valuable points for us in diving. Alan Katrenya has been great in breaststroke, Jimmy Tompkins has been good in backstroke, and Aidan Music is a good all-around swimmer. I’m putting him in events where I can use a good body.”

Music won the 500 free in 5:50.84 against the Wildcats for Woodland’s final event win of the night. Patrick Dietz earlier won the 50 free in 26.69 seconds while Andrew Cullen took the 200 IM in 2:28.32.

“Andrew Cullen has been huge,” Currier said. “He’s been my guy to fill in for a lot of events this year.”

Lacking depth, Currier isn’t as concerned with where the team will finish in the league championships at the end of February and beginning of March. Individual records and successes are much more important.

“My goal is for everybody to get personal bests,” Currier said. “If everyone gets their fastest times, it’s a successful season to me. For the team, with the smaller numbers, I’m not stressing that. Our relays should break some school records. That should be fabulous. I think that we should have some individuals — the O’Dells and Eric Dietz — that will be competing for medals.”

Woodland continues NVL competition with two more road meets this week, at Torrington on Friday and at Watertown on Tuesday.

Naugatuck on rare losing streak

After the Greyhounds suffered their first dual-meet loss to Holy Cross since 1983 on Jan. 13, they were unable to rebound last Friday in a tri-meet against Conard and Pomperaug, two of the state’s most powerful programs.

Conard defeated Naugatuck, 116-70, while Pomperaug beat the ‘Hounds, 117-69, in the borough. Only Naugy’s Isabelle Moody earned an event victory when she won the diving portion with 197.40 points.

Pomperaug and Conard battled for the rest of the points in a meet that the Panthers ended up winning, 97-89.

The losses sent the Greyhounds to 2-4 on the season while they sit at 2-1 in the NVL. Naugatuck will finish the regular season against league competition with six dual meets over the next month. An important NVL meet against potential favorite Sacred Heart is set for Friday night at Kennedy.

Three meets into the season, several program records are already in jeopardy. For starters, the 200 medley relay team of Pat O’Dell, Andy O’Dell, Andrew Cullen and Eric Dietz have produced a time within two seconds of the school record.

“We didn’t come close to that until late last season,” Woodland head coach Tom Currier said. “I like the relay records because that’s a team effort.”

The O’Dells, Cullen and Dietz swam a 1:46.86 in the 200 medley during a season-opening meet loss to Sacred Heart last month. Currier sees more potential in other events.

Both senior Pat O’Dell and sophomore Andy O’Dell also have a chance at reaching program-best times. Pat O’Dell excels in the stroke events, while Andy O’Dell shows promise in the 500 free.

Senior Michael Christiano won the diving event against non-conference foes Haddam-Killingworth and Pomperaug, while the team’s second diver, junior Steve McCusker, also put up solid numbers, according to Currier.

Dietz is also a factor in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke, while senior Jimmy Tompkins’ performances in the 100 backstroke are only a couple seconds off his time in the states last season.

Sophomore Alan Katrenya has also shown progress in multiple events.

“Alan has looked good in the 200 IM and breast,” Currier said.

Aidan Music has caught the eye of Currier — and opponents — in his freshman season. Currier has been impressed by Music’s early results, which included his first varsity event win, the 100 breast against Pomperaug.

“Aidan is looking to make states and is filling in spots that graduated,” Currier said. “He’s done the IM and breast very well. He’s a very well-rounded young swimmer.”

Woodland (0-3) lost six seniors from last year’s team and will need all the production it can to compete in dual meets against teams with larger rosters. The Hawks have only 14 athletes on their roster.

It’s hard to judge Woodland’s team results, simply because most of the teams on the schedule have more swimmers to put in more events. Early losses to Sacred Heart, Haddam-Killingworth and Pomperaug must be put into context.

“We’re always unevenly matched,” Currier said. “Those fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place finishes for the other team add up.”

Currier said his team refuses to be deterred. After all, swimming and diving are just as much individual sports as they are team sports.

“You’re always racing against the clock,” Currier said. “It’s all about the clock.”

And no matter whether the team wins or loses, each performer has his own goals.

“If everyone produces personal records, then we’ve had a successful season,” Currier said.

Woodland returns to the pool to host Naugatuck on Jan. 10 at 4 p.m. in Beacon Falls.

NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck boys swim team’s latest sign of progress took place on Tuesday night in a 93-82 victory over Seymour.

The Greyhounds (1-1) won their Naugatuck Valley League opener with six different individual event winners. Through two official dual meets, the young Greyhounds are being rewarded for recent hard work in tough practices.

“We practiced hard before the meet,” Naugatuck head coach Jim McKee said after the victory. “We had a good week of double workouts. We probably had 40-plus best times tonight, which is good.”

Naugy took the opening event, the 200-yard medley relay behind a solid effort from William Wright, Adam Branco, Matt Hall and Eric Hanley. The team took the event in 2:04.50.

Scott Sill kept things going with a victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:04.50. In the next event, the 200 IM, Chris Branco took the top spot with a time of 2:22.55.

Hanley followed with his second win of the night, a 25-second-flat finish in the 50 free.

In the diving event, Isabelle Moody took first place with a total of 157.80 points. By then, Naugatuck had the meet in hand.

Naugy’s George Vygoder won the 500 free in 5:51.63, while Namgyal Rakagme placed third and Mike Lauer took fifth. But the Greyhounds weren’t yet done racking up top finishes.

In the 200 free relay, Hall, Sill, Josh Deptula and Chris Branco took first in 1:45.18. Next, Wright won the 100 back in 1:00.55.

Despite a loss to Glastonbury last month, the Greyhounds continue to show strong effort to McKee, Naugy’s longtime coach. It was apparent on Tuesday in the way Naugatuck finished races.

“I saw that energy and effort at the end,” McKee said. “We’re making good progress.”

McKee noted upcoming meets against teams with talent like Woodland and Holy Cross. Both will be tests. Naugy travels to Woodland on Jan. 10 and hosts Holy Cross on Jan. 13 in meets that will help show the Greyhounds’ standing in the league.

“We’re so young and inexperienced,” McKee said. “It’s going to be tough to be ready this early in the season.”

NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck boys swimming and diving team came within eight points of winning its fifth-straight Naugatuck Valley League championship last year. This year’s team has the potential to start a new streak.

The Greyhounds lost 14 seniors from 2010, including numerous state qualifiers. Kyle Conrad, another class of 2011 member, won the 100-yard freestyle at the state’s Class L meet.

This season’s team has a chance to create new memories and keep Naugy’s winning tradition going. One feature of the team is something any coach would want: Depth.

“We have a lot of kids,” Naugatuck coach Jim McKee said. “I’m very much encouraged.”

The team returns a solid group, including four senior captains: David Brazee, Chris Branco, Art Keung and William Wright. Brazee and Branco bring flexibility to the lineup.

“We have a lot of guys ready to fill in,” McKee said.

Brazee swims the individual medley and the backstroke. Branco swims the free, distance and IM.

Wright has challenged school records in the 500 and 200 free events. Last season, Wright handled the IM and 100 fly, and finished among the top six in the NVL.

Naugatuck’s Chris Branco is one of four senior captains for the boys swimming and diving team. RA ARCHIVE

“And those aren’t even his best events,” McKee said of Wright’s performance at the NVLs. “He goes wherever you need him.”

Seniors also headline the diving position. Kaitlin Carter returns as a 200-point scorer, while Isabelle Moody also provides depth in the diving event.

Ryan Lewis, a junior, may be the wild card among divers. McKee said Lewis has a chance to challenge Carter and Moody for the top position.

Another junior, Matt Hall, can swim both the 50 free and butterfly, and has shown improvement. Other juniors, including Eric Hanley (fly and breaststroke), Scott Sill (500 and breast), George Vygoder (top-10 NVL finisher in the 500 free) should also contribute points for the Greyhounds.

Sophomore Adam Branco is another swimmer to watch, according to McKee. Branco impressed in the breaststroke last season, and also excels in the IM and the free events.

McKee said he is looking forward to the upcoming campaign.

“It’s fun coaching when you’re in the hunt,” McKee said. “And we’re in the hunt.”

With the league indicational meet at Kennedy scheduled for Friday, followed by a dual meet against Glastonbury, one of the state’s top teams, Naugy will learn a lot about itself early.

So far, the team has a competitive fire.

“The team is working hard and trying hard,” McKee said.

BEACON FALLS — The Woodland boys swimming and diving team may come up short when it comes to depth in the 14-member lineup, but the Hawks are hardly short on talent.

Last season, Woodland swam to a sixth-place finish at the Naugatuck Valley League championships and followed that up with a sixth-place showing in the field of 26 teams at the Class S state championships.

The Hawks lost much of their production with the graduation of captains Adam Trumbley, Tony Madigan and Rebecca Bock along with seniors Lindsay Boland, Matt Costa and Eric Beaudoin.

But Woodland is not empty-handed. The Hawks return five talented seniors who made their mark in state competition last season.

Leading the way will be senior Patrick O’Dell, a second-place finisher in the 100 backstroke at the NVL championships to go along with a fifth-place showing in the 100 butterfly. O’Dell placed third in the 100 back and sixth in the 100 fly at the Class S meet.

“We did lose six seniors from last season,” Woodland coach Tom Currier said. “That is an awful lot of production to try to replace. We are not very deep as some of the teams we face in the dual-meet portion of our schedule. But we do return a very talented group of seniors this season. They are all good leaders and set a good example. They are the big hitters on the team.”

Senior Eric Dietz finished seventh in the Class S 50 freestyle and was part the seventh-place 400 relay team with Trumbley and Patrick and Andy O’Dell.

Sophomore Andy O’Dell made his mark with a fourth-place showing in the 500 freestyle at the NVL championships along with a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle.

Senior Jimmy Tompkins was a state qualifier in the 100 backstroke and senior diver Michael Christiano finished 12th in the Class S diving competition.

Senior Andrew Cullen and sophomore Alan Katrenya were also state qualifiers in the breaststroke and junior diver Steve McCusker gives the Hawks some added depth.

“I would be happy if we could maintain what we achieved last season,” Currier said. “I think the biggest challenge we face is to find swimmers to man all of the events. With only 14 members in the lineup we are going to need a few kids to step up and fill the void.”

The Hawks will compete in the NVL Indicationals on Friday before their dual-meet schedule begins with a home contest against Sacred Heart on Dec. 14.

After posting the most wins (13), most points at the Naugatuck Valley League championships (744), and tied the best finish at the NVL meet (third) in program history, the Hawks wrapped up one more school record by finishing fourth at last Tuesday’s Class S championships.

Woodland finished with 328 points, just ahead of Suffield and behind Weston, Lauralton Hall, and St. Joseph. The fourth-place finish shattered the previous school-best of ninth, achieved multiple times last decade.

“I was extremely happy with all our finishes,” Woodland coach Mike Magas said. “It was the best ever for a Woodland girls swim team with what we did this year. We never scored over 600 points at the NVL meet and this year we went over 700 points. My expectations were not only met but also exceeded.”

Jen Tavares and Dayna Chucta both earned all-state honors with their performances at the meet while Katie-Jean Hinckley, Chrissy Leeper, Sydney Corneau, Emily Soulier

Tavares was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.29 and third in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.13 to earn all-state status in both events.

Hinckley was fifth in the 200 free in 2:00.14 and fifth in the 500 free in 5:23.69 while Leeper was seventh in the 100 fly in 1:04.45 and placed 14th in the 200 free in 2:08.13.

Corneau placed eighth in the 50 free in 26.84 seconds and 11th in the 100 free in 58.53 seconds.

Soulier, Boris, and Trumbley also qualified for the finals in several events and added valuable points to the team’s results.

Several Woodland relay teams also earned points. The Hawks’ 200 medley relay team of Trumbley, Carolyn Luddy, Boris, and Soulier placed 15th in 2:15.53 while the 200 free relay squad of Tavares, Leeper, Corneau, and Soulier was fifth in 1:47.53. The 400 free relay team of Leeper, Sydney Corneau, Tavares, and Brianna Christiano was also sixth in 4:02.68.

Chucta won the diving championship by among her slimmest margins of the season, scoring 348.34 points to edge Weston’s Hannah Schroeder by just more than seven points.

Chucta finished first in every meet this season except the State Open, where she finished 16th with a score of 340.35.

“I try to stay humble about it,” Chucta said. “I have improved so much from last year and I have worked really hard but it does feel really good to be ahead of the competition and making a name for myself.”

Chucta broke the school records set by her older sister, Heather, in both the six- and 11-dive events. She also earned this year’s NVL and Class S titles while being named to both the All-NVL and all-state squads multiple times.

“I trained really hard over the summer but I never expected to be as successful as I have been,” Chucta said.

At the State Open, Tavares was ninth in the 200 free in 1:56.74 and 22nd in the 100 back in 1:00.98. She, along with Chucta and Hinckley made up perhaps the best individual threesome in school history.

“They’re definitely up there with some of the top girls of all time,” Magas said. “I have girls from years past that I still hold near and dear to my heart because they’re the ones who built the foundation—Steph O’Donnell, Deirdre Burke, Rachael Battis, Heather Chucta, Jill Pagoni, and others—so I don’t want to take anything away from what they did to establish the program. But five years down the road, these girls will be remembered the way those girls are.”

But Magas recognized the work of everyone else on the team for making the season as successful as it was.

“We had other girls who really stepped up too,” Magas said. “Those three were fantastic, but without some of the other swimmers we would have never done as well as we did. It will definitely be a while before we have a team like this again.”

NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck girls swim team season ended last Wednesday with multiple season-best times. On Sunday, the ‘Hounds celebrated its season filled with ups and downs, and a strong finish.

The season culminated on Sunday with the team’s end-of-the-year banquet. There was plenty to celebrate.
First, Bianca Antrum and Rebecca Doback earned All-Naugatuck Valley League honors. Both competed in the Class L event last week.

Antrum, the team’s top diver, took on the challenge of being a first-year swimmer and advanced to the states. Doback proved to be one of the team’s go-to competitors who swam a season-best time in the 200 free at the Class L meet.

Head coach Jim McKee said he was pleased with the efforts at last week’s Class L state meet.

“Everyone who swam at the states swam their season-best times,” McKee said.

That included the relay events. Doback teamed with Martina Niebrzydowski, Elizabeth Walsh and Amanda Miller in the 200 free.

In the 400 free, the combination of Miller, Barbara Martins, Walsh and Doback struck for their best time of the season. Walsh added a lifetime-best showing in the 500 free.

“The times justify the work,” McKee added to summarize the results.

Erica Spino, Maria Carranza, Madison Wilson and Miller combined to produce a season-best time of 2:12.11 in the 200 medley relay.

After ending the season on a positive note last week, McKee handed out individual awards on Sunday. While the names of the awards are unique, they are emblematic of each swimmer’s improvement and contributions to a long season that begins in the late summertime.

“I was very pleased,” McKee said of the season and the team’s work. “My job is to make them know how to go fast. They had to buy into what we were doing and it worked.”

Award Winning

Whatever it Takes Award: Rachel Doggin.

McKee said Doggin swims year-round and her season-best times at the NVLs were proof.

OK, I’ll Do It Award: Kim O’Brien.

McKee said O’Brien took on difficult events, such as butterfly and backstroke, and did well.

Swam Out of Her Mind Award: Rachel Fox.

Fox improved throughout the season and her times dropped significantly.

Into the Fight Award: Bianca Antrum.

As a new swimmer, Antrum joined the team and contributed almost immediately.

Not Afraid to Die Award: Daisy Walsh.

McKee said Walsh swam hard in every day and was one of the team’s most fierce competitors.

Out of Her Mind Award: Maria Carranza.

Carranza swam impressive times and seemingly surpassed expectations.

Indelible Will Award: Rebecca Doback.

Doback never gave up throughout the season and McKee congratulated her approach.

WATERBURY — The Woodland Hawks set seven school records and posted their best finish in program history at the Naugatuck Valley League swimming and diving championships last Saturday at Kennedy High.

The Hawks took third overall behind second-place Torrington and champion Watertown. Naugatuck finished fifth.
With a 13-1-1 record, the Hawks are in the midst of their best season and earned 744 points at the NVLs.

“That’s by far and away our best point total ever,” Woodland head coach Mike Magas said. “I’m really proud of our team.”

Katie-Jean Hinckley of Woodland won two events—the 200 and 500 freestyle—with personal-best times. She took the 200 in 2:00.39 and grabbed the 500 in 5:22.04.

Hinckley was also a part of two second-place relay finishes in the 200 and 400 free races.

“Katie has been working hard her entire career,” Magas said. “This was a good way to show it.”

Woodland’s Jen Tavares took the 100 backstroke, and was a part of five school records. She set a new record in the backstroke, the 100 free, her 50 split in the 200 free relay and the overall finishes of the 200 and 400 free relays.

The 200 and 400 free relays featured Hinckley, Tavares, Chrissy Leeper and Sydney Corneau.

In addition, Dayna Chucta shattered the school’s record previously held by her sister, Heather, and captured the diving event. She finished with 391.15 points.

“Dayna beat the record over 50 points,” Magas said. “The performance she put on was pretty amazing.”

Woodland also had two relay teams take second-place finishes and break school records. In short, it was a memorable night for the Woodland girls swim team.

“We had about 80 percent of our swims result in personal-best times,” Magas said.

Bianca Antrum had Naugy’s best finish—second place in the diving event. Rebecca Doback placed fourth in the 500 free, while teammate Elizabeth Walsh finished eighth.

Naugatuck head coach Jim McKee said the late-October snowstorm reduced practice time the week before the championship, and could have hurt the squad’s results.

Doback, Walsh, Barbara Martins and Amanda Miller took fourth in the 400 free—Naugy’s best relay finish. Miller also took seventh in the 100 free.

“We had a great season marred by a snowstorm that took its toll,” McKee said. “I was proud of our girls’ effort but I was disappointed for them. They worked very hard all year and deserved better.”

Both Naugatuck and Woodland will now focus on the states, which begin this week. The Greyhounds have a chance to improve on times and they have already turned their attention to the next competition. The ‘Hounds will compete in Class L swimming qualifying on Saturday, while the diving finals are Monday and the swimming finals are Nov. 16.

“My goal is to prepare for the class championships next weekend,” McKee said.

Woodland has a strong chance to make a splash at the next level. The Class S diving finals are set for Thursday, while the swimming qualifying will be Saturday and finals will be Nov. 15.

“We’d love to have a top-three finish,” Magas said.

WATERBURY — Woodland tied a school record with a third-place finish while Naugatuck placed fifth at the Naugatuck Valley League swimming and diving championships Saturday at the John Reardon Pool at Kennedy High.

The Hawks (744 points) placed behind league champion Watertown (833) and Torrington (777). The Greyhounds (507) finished in the top half of the league, behind Holy Cross (509) in fifth place.

Woodland senior Katie-Jean Hinckley was one of the day’s stars, winning two events. She captured the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 0.39 seconds, beating the competition by more than two seconds. She later won the 500 free in 5:22.04, more than 13 seconds better than the field.

Hinckley was also part of two second-place relay teams. She anchored both the 200 free and the 400 free relay teams, which also consisted of Jen Tavares, Chrissy Leeper, and Sydney Corneau. Both squads finished about three seconds off the winning pace set by Watertown.

Tavares had a strong individual day as well, winning the 100 backstroke in 1:00.45 and finishing second in the 100 free in 54.34 seconds.

The Hawks’ third champion was diver Dayna Chucta, who obliterated the competition. Her score of 391.15 is a new school record for 11 dives and was good enough to win by 83.65 points over second-place finisher Bianca Antrum of Naugatuck.

Both teams begin state competition later this week.
