FUNDRAISERS FOR HAITI

The American Red Cross is sponsoring two events in March in an effort “To Bring Help, Hope and Healing to the People in Haiti.” Dinner and entertainment will be provided at Anna Donte’s Restaurant, 284 North Main St. in Union City, on March 3 and 10. Tickets are $65 per person and include salad, ziti, chicken francaise, dessert and coffee. B.Y.O.B. is accepted. HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS SLEEPOUT

The Senior High Youth Group of the Congregational Church of Naugatuck is holding a Homelessness Awareness Sleepout on the Naugatuck green from noon on Saturday, March 13 until noon on Sunday, March 14.  Donations will be collected for the entire 24 hours on the corner of Meadow and Division streets. All moneys received will go to Brass City Harvest in Waterbury. Please support these youth as they seek in this small way to open the eyes of others while raising funds to help those in our community who may not have a warm meal and a secure roof over their heads.

The post, located at 239 Rubber Ave., will hold a meeting on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m. Officers will be nominated and dues are due.

The Ladies Auxiliary will hold their family dinner on Sunday, March 14 from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the post. Corned beef and cabbage, salad, dessert and coffee will be served. AMERICAN LEGION #17 MEETING

The Naugatuck Unit #17, American Legion Auxiliary will hold the regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Post Home, 21 Cedar St. The Program Chairman will report on ongoing projects and reports will be given on participation in recent Department and Second District programs. CASINO TRIP FOR BOB VEILLETTE

The bus will leave from 159 General Patton Drive on Saturday, March 13 at 12:00 noon for the Mohegan Sun Casino. Tickets are $30 per person and include a $15 food coupon or free buffet and 3 $5 Big Wheel Bets. TEEN THEATER CABARET

Come celebrate Saint Paddy’s Day with the Naugatuck Teen Theater at the Fourth Annual Cabaret for Charity at Saint Michael’s Church Hall, 210 Church St. on March 12 and 13. TENDER YEARS PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION

Tender Years Preschool, Inc. will hold an early registration drive and open house on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Applications for the 2010-2011 school year for children ages three to five will be accepted. NEON COMMUNITY DINNER

LENTEN BAKERY

The St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 210 Church St. on the green will hold Lenten bakery sales at the Parish Hall Friday mornings from 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Feb. 19 – March 26. Baked goods will include various breads, hot cross buns, rolls, raisin squares, afterthoughts and pies of all sorts. Special orders for delivery will be taken a week in advance. LENTEN FISH FRY

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Portuguese Club will sponsor a Lenten fish fry from Feb. 19 through March 26. All groups of ten or more will be charged $10 per person. Reservations should be made no later that Wednesday of that week for groups by calling 203-729-1211, 203-729-7785, or 203-729-9018. All other individual meals will be $12. We’re also providing take out meals.

LENTEN FISH BAKE

Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church on the green will host a fish bake every Friday during lent beginning Feb. 19 in the Parish Hall. Meals are $10, $16 for kids under 12. Dinner will be served from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at 210 Church St.

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED OF NAUGATUCK

The next celebration of the Church Women United of Naugatuck will be the World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 5 at Hillside Covenant Church, 100 Hillside Ave. There will be a potluck luncheon at 12:00 noon which will be followed by a special program, “Let Everything that Has Breath Praise God,’ which was written by women in Cameroon. There will also be a slide presentation.

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF NAUGATUCK

The church, located on Division Street, will hold an “Inside Islam” talk on Wednesday, March 3 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Mongi S. Dhaouadi, Executive Driector of the Connecticut Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic relations, will provide an inside perspective on the practice of Islam. GARDEN CLUB BUS TRIP

The Naugatuck Garden Club presents a bus trip to the newly reopened Boston Flower Show on Saturday, March 27. The cost of the trip is $53 per person, and includes bus transportation, driver’s gratuity and admission to the flower show. All food will be your responsibility. Your trip must be paid for by March 17. Sorry, we cannot save seats without payment, so do not ask. All monies paid are nonrefundable but are transferable. Remember, it is your responsibility to find a replacement person if you cancel and there is no waiting list to draw from.

NAUGATUCK RENEGADES

The Naugatuck Renegades are looking for boys ages 7-14 interested in joining premier competition baseball teams. The Renegades play in the Waterbury Boys Baseball League. Home games are played at Breen Field South and road games are in the Waterbury area. Teams will be divded by ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 and will compete against the top players of other leagues like Prospect, Beacon Falls, and others. All are welcome to join winter workouts in session; however roster space is limited on competition teams. Little League players welcome also. UNION CITY LITTLE LEAGUE

Final registration will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Union City Clubhouse on Morris Street.

For baseball, boys born between May 1, 1997 and April 30, 2005 are eligible; girls born between May 1, 2003 and April 30, 2005 are eligible.

For softball, girls born between Jan. 1, 1993 and Dec. 31, 2003 are eligible.

Players must reside within UCLL boundaries with the exception of all Naugatuck girls ages 13 – 16, who are eligible for softball at UCLL.

BALLROOM DANCING LESSONS

A new eight-week Ballroom Dancing Session will be held from Feb. 11, 2010 to April 1, 2010 at the Naugatuck Portuguese Club on 110 Rubber Ave. in Naugatuck. BOOK CLUB

The Whittemore Book Club will meet on March 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Reading Room to discuss “The Catcher in the Rye” by J. D. Salinger.

JEOPARDY TOURNAMENT

AFTER-SCHOOL CRAFTS

A Robot Craft Workshop for children in grades 1-4 will be held on Tuesday, March 9 from 4:30 -5:30 p.m. Children will make robots out of found material. Please bring boxes from tissues or cereal for the robot’s head and body.

INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will begin its free income tax preparation program for low- and middle-income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention to those sixty and older. SAFE DRIVING COURSE

An AARP Safe Driving course will be held at the center on Monday, March 15 and Tuesday, March 16 between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.  This is a two-day course. The fees are $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Call the center to register.

SAINT PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATION

MOHEGAN SUN TRIP

The Naugatuck Senior Center has organized a Mohegan Sun/Sham Rocked day trip for Thursday, March 11. Enjoy time at Mohegan Sun Casino. Receive a $15 food voucher and a $15 Surprise Casino Bonus. NAUGATUCK RETIRED MEN’S CLUB

The Naugatuck Retired Men’s Club is looking for new members. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Senior Center, 300 Meadow St. The group is for men who enjoy shooting pool, playing cards, and attending picnics and banquets. FRIENDS OF BEACON FALLS LIBRARY MEETING

LION’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS

The Beacon Falls Lions Club is now accepting applications for four college scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each.

The William Cable Memorial Scholarship and the Beacon Falls Lions Club Scholarship will be awarded to graduating high school seniors residing in Beacon Falls who are pursuing higher education at an accredited college or university. The Peter Rydzik Scholarship will be awarded on the same basis, with a preference for graduating members of the Beacon Falls Leos Club. A final $2,000 will be reserved exclusively for graduating seniors who reside in Beacon Falls with the emphasis on community service.

All graduating seniors are encouraged to apply. Applications have been delivered to Woodland Regional High School and will be available through the Guidance Office or at the Beacon Falls Library. LIONESS CLUB MEEETING

The Lioness Club of Beacon Falls will meet on Monday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. at the Beacon Falls Senior Center, 57 North Main St. The Lioness Club provides community-minded women the opportunity to serve those in need. ADULT PINECAR RACING

The public is invited to Saint Michael’s Church for a night of adult pinewood-derby racing on Feb. 27. Participants can build their own custom car or have a “professional” build one for them. DR. SUESS STORY TIME

Come celebrate the birthday of that cool “cat in the hat” Dr. Seuss with a special preschool story time with the Kid’s Care Club at Laurel Ledge Elementary School on Thursday, March 4. BEATLES TRIBUTE CONCERT

The Beacon Falls Lioness Club and the WRHS Fine Arts Booster Club will proudly present Abbey Road (a Beatles tribute band) on Saturday, March 27 at 7:00 pm at Woodland Regional High School auditorium, 135 Back Rimmon Rd, Beacon Falls.

VIP tickets are $60 for seats in first two rows and include one hour of pre-show appetizers at Full Harvest Restaurant in Beacon Falls, a back stage pass, and a goodie bag filled with a variety of Beatles sundries. Other tickets are $30 for a seat in first section of the auditorium starting in the third row and $20 for any ticket in the back section of the auditorium. REGION 16 ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Region 16 will be offering Adult Education programs in a variety of subjects including yoga, self-defense, cooking, line-dancing, Spanish language and volleyball. Courses are open to anyone 16 or older who is not enrolled in a high school program. Most courses are $38 with a $4 registration fee; seniors 55 and older can participate for $20 plus the $4 fee. WRHS TOUCHDOWN CLUB

The Woodland Regional High School Football Booster Club is looking for new members for the upcoming season. The “Touchdown Club” supports the Hawks by supplementing the school budget with scholarships, equipment and additional training resources. Only paying members are permitted to vote at Booster Club meetings. To become a member of the WRHS Touchdown Club, please send your name, phone number, e-mail address, and the player’s name you are supporting with a check for $10 to Woodland Touchdown Club, P.O. HISTORICAL SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP

The Prospect Historical Society will be awarding a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who will be attending an institute of higher learning in the fall. Applicants must be a Prospect resident. The Nellie and Ruth Cowdell Scholarship is based on academic record, financial need, service and a short essay about Prospect.

Applications are available at the high school guidance office, Prospect Town Hall and the Prospect Public Library.

BEREAVEMENT SEMINAR

The Family Life Office of the Archdiocese of Hartford is sponsoring a ten-week seminar for the bereaved at the Saint Anthony Parish Center at 4 Union City Road. It will begin Thursday, March 4 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Register by calling 203-758-5292, 860-628-6751 or 203-758-5421.

BOTTLE AND CAN DRIVE

The V.F.W. Post 8075 will be holding a bottle and can drive until March 1, 2010. Any donations can be dropped off at the post home. All proceeds will benefit various veteran’s projects.

PARKS AND RECREATION

ZUMBA

This program will be held on Saturdays from 9:45 – 10:30 a.m. at the Prospect Grange Hall. It is open to anyone 14 years of age or older. Zumba is an up-and-coming style of aerobics which incorporates hip Salsa dancing with a cardiovascular workout. Cost is $60 for residents, $65 for non-residents.

EARLY LEARNERS

This class is a way to introduce children to a guided routine. It is open to children 3 to 5 years old and will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the fall from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 – 2:15 p.m. at the Prospect Meeting Place. Cost is $110 for residents and $115 for non-residents.

NARANON MEETING

YOUTH SOCCER REGISTRATIONS

Are you ready for Spring Soccer 2010? Boys and girls born between July 31, 2000 and Aug. 1, 2006 are eligible for U-5 through U-10 and Mini-Kicks youth soccer.

Registrations will be held at the UPS Store, 50 Waterbury Road and at the Dan-Mart, 25 N. Main Street in Beacon Falls on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

You can also mail a registration to Prospect Soccer, 50 Waterbury Rd. Box 333, Prospect, Conn. 06712.

Fees: U5-U10, $50 per child; Mini-Kicks $30; family cap of $135. There will be additional fees for uniforms. A late fee of $10 will be applied to registrations received after Feb.15, 2010. Registration closes on March 15.

MARDI GRAS CELEBRATION

On Tuesday, Feb. 16 the Prospect Congregational Church will hold its annual Shrove Tuesday Dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, corned beef hash, applesauce, bread, dessert and a beverage. Adults are $10, kids ages 5-10 are $5, children under 5 eat free. There is a $25 family cap. Tickets available at the door. V.F.W. ZITI DINNER

The Prospect V.F.W. Post 8075 , 218 Cheshire Road, will sponsor a Ziti Dinner to benefit the Saint Jude Children’s Hospital on Sunday, Feb. 21 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Suggested donations are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $8 for children. AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY VALENTINES DANCE

Prospect’s own rising star, multi-instrumentalist Vincent Ingala, will provide music and entertainment for the Prospect American Legion Auxiliary Fifth Annual Patriotic Hearts Valentine’s Dinner Dance on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 6:00 p.m. at Adonna’s Banquet Room on Waterbury Road.

Tickets are $50 per person to include soup, salad, entrees, vegetables, desserts, beer, wine, coffee and soft drinks. Proceeds will benefit “Grant the Last Wish” program for terminally ill veterans.
